Excerpt from An Introduction To French Authors: Being A Reader For Beginners A new Reader may be deemed a superfluity; yet I venture upon presenting one to the public. It has seemed to me that there might be a call for a book with short and easy stories, suitable for the class-room; that this book should be an introduction to our best authors, and contain such a variety of graded material that a student, having read it, should be really prepared to undertake difficult authors; that the stories should not be adaptations from other languages, but selections from the works of Genuine French writers, having a standing in France, and therefore French in feeling. Although I should rest satisfied to have my book judged on these lines, I have attempted something more. During my years of experience as a teacher of Modern Languages, I have often been reluctantly compelled to notice the utter indifference of many pupils when historical information was given in regard to European nations. The conclusion to which I have come after pondering over this subject, is that this indifference was caused by a lack of general knowledge which ought to have been the connecting link between the bits of information vouchsafed in foot-notes, or by the teacher. It has always seemed wrong to me, not to make use of the hours devoted to the study of language for imparting at least some knowledge of the history of the nation whose language is being studied.
